Skill Builder: Pattern-Making for Stained Glass

Stained Glass Pattern Design with Bobby Psenka- Intermediate + 3-Week Class

Have you got a piece of glass you just haven't found the right pattern for?  Have you had this idea for a stained glass piece floating in your head for a while, but don't think you have the skills to create it?  Maybe you've got a photograph or other piece of art you want to recreate in stained glass. This is the class for you!

Instructor Bobby Psenka will show you how get your idea out of your head and put it on paper.  You'll use pattern paper and pencil to sketch, measure, trace, erase!, and finalize a pattern of your own design.  By midway through the second class you could be ready to start working with your pattern, or you might spend all three classes working on a really detailed design!  Important design concepts such as hinge points, framing, and layout, symmetry, design, shapes, support, and hanging will be discussed, and bring your questions!

Please do not bring an existing pattern or photo of an existing stained glass piece to copy.  We respect copyright and protect artists' hard work in developing and distributing their original patterns.

Stained Glass Express will provide:

Pattern paper, contact paper, squares and rulers

Use of our scoring tools, soldering irons, and other tools and equipment

Guild membership for the duration of class includes: cubby storage space, 20% store discount, attendance at Tuesday evening Guild Night, and independent use of the classroom during store hours.

Plan to Bring or Buy:

Inspiration! You must have an idea of what you want to create! (Printouts are a good idea.)

Your favorite pencil or pen for drawing

Glass, Foil, Solder, Flux, and any other materials needed to bring your pattern to life!

Your own scoring device and soldering iron if you prefer them

Class one: Discussion, exploration of tools, begin work on pattern creation

Class Two: Examine pattern and make any tweaks, then get to work!

Class Three: We don't expect that you will finish your stained glass piece by the end of a third week, but the third class gives you an opportunity to workshop your design with Bobby's support.  We hope you'll share your finished original works when they are done!
