The males are brilliant red and the females are light brown with red highlights. They do not migrate in the winter to warmer places; they stay in the North. They have learned to live near people. As a result, you can enjoy them at your feeder year-round. They are the state bird of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia.
