GLASS ETCHING

GLASS ETCHING

Glass etching is really, really easy.  The most common is to use etch crème, which actually etches the surface slightly, leaving a frosty appearance.  It can be used for cabinet doors, panels, mirrors, entry doors, wine glasses, mugs, dishes, box tops and windows.

In this example, doing the large sections on the right panel with etch creme would be difficult.  Probably have to switch to sandblasting for this.

You can purchase pre-cut stencils or cut your own.

The etch crème and the stencils have instructions.  Basic steps are:

1.        Clean the glass.

2.       Apply the stencil and make sure it has adhered properly and does not have holes.

3.       Mask off with masking tape anything you don’t want etched and might be in danger of getting crème on it.

4.       Using a small soft brush, apply the cream to the stenciled areas.  Wait for 3-5 minutes.

5.       Rinse with cold water.  DONE!

For a deeper etch, sandblasting is another method.  It involves more equipment but allows a more even etch over large surfaces and allows deeper carved designs.
